Situated on a Viking site, Pirous’ fortified castle was founded in the 12th century. The old legend of the Pirou geese is one of the most popular in the Cotentin ; it pretends to link the origin of the castle to the Scandinavian invasions.

One of Pirou’s knights took part in the conquest of England and he received a possession in Somerset where his family founded Stroke-Pero. After the Hundred Years’ War, the castle was restored in the 15th, 17th and 18th century.

Since 1966, Pirou’s fortified castle is in restoration. Under the Abbot Lelégard (dead in 1994), the Lucerne Abbey Foundation continues the reconstruction of this medieval castle.

In its recent state, the fortified castle built on an island, conserved in its old part, the ramparts from the 12th and 14th century.

To can access it, you have to pass five defensive gates, turning around the central moat, where you find the bakery from the 18th century, the cider press, the Saint Lawrence’s Chapel, the Court Room and the old stables

This farmyard takes into the interior of the surrounding wall thanks to a stone bridge, which replaced the drawbridge in the 17th century. The ramparts protect the old lodge from the beginning of the 17th century to the east and the new lodge from the beginning of the 18th century to the south.
